Child Employment and Character Building

I recently unearthed a diary from when I was 12 and planned to open a beauty spa in my parent's house. What I later learned in B-school was called the "Unique Selling Proposition" (USP) was that, after the neighborhood ladies had paid me to apply wet oatmeal to their faces, do their makeup with the Lip Smackers line, and french braid their hair, I was going to invite them to lie on chaise lounges in my backyard with Fleetwood Mac album jackets that I'd covered in tin foil. You know, to boost the skin-cancer properties of unprotected tanning.

It may sound like a pre-teen's fever dream, but in fact the spa was just another in the series of childhood businesses I started, each with their own USP. Yet people say "Child Labor" like it's a bad thing.

Today I'm over on "It Builds Character…And Other Parenting Clichés" with a post lamenting the loss of childhood entrepreneurship.  The team of contributors there tackles everything from home décor during the potty training phase to why Gwyneth Paltrow is never going to convince us that her life is as bad as ours. Clearly, I've found some like-minded ranters; I'm thrilled they invited me to guest post!

Hope you'll click through here to read more (and to see a picture of me in my Business Bandana when I was nine and co-director of a thriving neighborhood preschool.)

I thought it said "Annoying Know It Alls"

Today I've got a guest post on SMARTS Magazine, an online magazine for "Aspiring Know It Alls" who share  nuggets of wisdom about their particular arena of expertise, be it fashion and beauty or cooking or health matters. So what's my particular piece of the pie?

Failure. How proud my parents must be.

Specifically, it's about how being a failure at a big project was actually a good lesson for my kids, in disguise. I hope you'll click through to Failing By Example and leave a comment there if you liked it.

As for the Aspiring part of the tagline, you can just ask my siblings and husband...I achieved "Know It All" status YEARS ago.

Laughing Out Loud

I got an email the other day from a neighbor who said - and I'll paraphrase - "I was driving down the street and saw the snarly doberman yanking his owner's chain...when I turned to see what had him so riled up, it was you and your sweet pup headed in the opposite direction."

Yes, we're still driving Clarice crazy what with the breathing and the tail wagging, but the good news is that we're keeping people entertained. In fact, if you missed the original post, I'm honored that it is today's featured story on LOL - a blog devoted to "the best of the sit-down comedians" at http://livingwithlaughter.com/. Skip on over there and check it out, along with some truly funny stuff from bloggers all over the Interwebs - my favorite is the futile attempt by moog to make Mario Lopez ugly. That dude would probably still look good as he fled in terror from Clarice.

I think this counts as my first official guest post, or something in that arena anyway...onward and upward!
